Thumbs up DIY: joey modded headlights

DIY- smoked headlight

I don’t have pics for this so you’ll just have to visualize it.. It’s pretty easy anyways.

What you need:

-heat gun
-black paint, preferable gloss(I only had flat black so I had to use that)
-some kind of silicone or glue sealer. I used an epoxy based glue
-2 flathead screwdrivers
-utility knife
-patience

Ok take your headlight and turn the heat gun on max and heat the edges of the light, where the glass and plastic meet. It works best if you wear gloves as the glass can get pretty hot. You’re going to have to heat the edge for a fair amount of time, but not too long as you don’t want to melt the plastic. What I did was to heat the entire edge to start to soften it all up but then to focus on one side at a time.
Now take your utility knife and use it to cut between the plastic and glass. You basically are trying to slice the existing glue so it makes it easier to pry apart. Chances are you won’t be able to cut all the way through yet.
After this is done run your heat gun over the edge for a bit longer. Take your flathead screwdriver and start to pry one side. Don’t try to force your screwdriver all the way through and pry as you’ll just crack and break the plastic. You have to work the edges, prying bit by bit if you want this to work.
After you’ve done some prying, apply more heat to another part of the light and repeat the prying process in the previous step.
You need to keep doing this until you can pry it good enough to ‘break through’ the glue. Once you’ve broken through, that’s the easy part. You’ll need to take your other screwdriver and put it in the hole you’ve created and then just work it around until you get the glass separated from the plastic housing.
It’s very easy to crack your glass and plastic while doing this so be careful and patient.
If the headlights are old it’s going to be hard to get it apart and the plastic will crack and break apart easily. The oven method might be best for those cases. –which I haven’t done before so I’m not going to post a how-to for that.

Once you have the lense off, paint the face, top inside and bottom inside of the headlight assembly whatever color you want (black preferrably). Let it completely dry. While it's drying give the lense a good scrub and clean all the old glue off the grove. You may have to heat up the groves a bit so the glue comes off easier. Once the groves are cleaned on both the lense and the headlight assembly, lay a bead of the silicone along the grove in the headlight assembly. place the lense back in place making sure there are no holes or gaps in the silicone seal. At this point depending on the headlight you have, i would get a few clamps and clamp the headlight back together so it dries nice and tight. Let dry overnight or until it's completely dry. For extra seal you can run more silicone or glue around the edge after its dry.
